Diabetes In Tonga

THe Impact of chronic disease

Although there are many Tongans living with diabetes and other metabolic syndrome complications, the country does not have a single dialysis center. People are subject to kidney failure with no source of hope to treat their ongoing symptoms. This is affecting real people and causing real pain. We want to give them relief and hope for treatment. Starting in 2025, a free dialysis center for qualifying locals will open in Tongatapu near the Vaiola Hospital in Nukuʻalofa. The Siaosi Brown Dialysis Center will begin with five dialysis machines—making a huge difference for Tongans in need of these life-saving and life-changing treatments.

During my short visit to Tonga, on most days, I saw dozens of patients who were arranged and scheduled to see me. Not surprisingly, larger percentages of these patients (about 60 to 70 percent) suffered from metabolic syndrome and its complications.
